A new payment system for the NHS will see funding for hospitals linked to patient experience, indicating that the government are keen to improve the services provided and to make efficiency gains to weather the harsh economic times ahead.
Andy Burnham, Health Secretary last week stated that approximately 10% of hospital funding will depend on patient satisfaction. According to Burnham’s report, “a high-quality and productive NHS needs a payment systems that offer the right incentives”, and as such should encourage providers to maximise efficiency, provide the best quality care, and divert hospital care into the community to reduce costly admissions.
